Data of the National Bureau of Statistics show the women in the Republic of Moldova gain by 14% on average less than the men for the same types of activities. In term of money, this discrepancy is 1,098 lei on average. The female promoters of gender equality say this is due to the employers’ attitude to the female employees or to the absence of trust in these, IPN reports.

The director of the Women’s Political Club 50/50 Ecaterina Mardarovici said the women in the Republic of Moldova are disadvantaged on the labor market and are paid less compared with the men for the same types of activities. The fact that the women opt for the status of mother to the detriment of the career makes the employers be more skeptical towards female employees.

“The burden of the family in the Republic of Moldova continues to be borne by women. This fact affects the employers’ confidence in a female employee in the long run. We plead for developing the system of crèches in the Republic of Moldova as this will be a solution for the women to combine the career with the status of mother,” the promoter of gender equality stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

Furthermore, statistical data show the men in the Republic of Moldova are more actively engaged in decision-making processes than the women. In Moldova’s Parliament, 25 of the 101 MPs are women, which is 24.8%, as against the European average of 29.9%.

“The female intellectual capital in Republic of Moldova is much greater than the male capital and it is a pity not to put this capital at the country’s service. There is a considerable discrepancy between the number of women and the number of men in executive posts. Of the managers of all levels, 54.3% are men, while 45.7% are women,” stated Ecaterina Mardarovici.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics of Moldova, the men leave the education system earlier than the women, in favor of work. Also, the Labor Force Survey shows the women aged between 25 and 64 have a higher level of training than the men of the same age.
