What the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” does contributes to the change of voters’ mentality, Democratic MP Dumitru Diacov stated in the public debate “Political communication in periods of crisis: between public interest and narrow political interest”, which was staged by IPN News Agency in co-production with Radio Moldova.

“We can create as many parties as you want, but nothing will change if we do not have active and informed people who show that they care and who take part in the sociopolitical life. We speak about the theft of the billion, but the one who allegedly stole it was voted by 70% of the residents in Orhei. I see a new phenomenon: earlier those who mounted protests brought the people to protests, fed and paid them; now a large part of the people are sincerely motivated and this is a positive thing,” said the MP.

Dumitru Diacov also said that he sees no problem if the party that will eventually be formed based on the Platform wins the next elections and governs, but this party must come to power as a result of a democratic exercise, in free and civilized elections. “If a putsch is wanted, it is something else and I’m against such a development,” he stated.

According to the politician, the protesters demand early elections, but cannot say how these would be organized when there is no legal procedure for Parliament to dissolve itself. “We have only two situations when early elections can be called – Parliament does not name the Government and the head of state is not elected. If the Government resigns, Parliament has the constitutional right to choose another Government. I’m absolutely sure that in such an atmosphere the legislative body will vote in a new Government. Realistic demands must be formulated. Any change must be democratic,” said the Democratic lawmaker.

He noted that he pleads for a dialogue between the government and the people so as to reach compromises and deal with the problems and is convinced that this social pressure will lead to better functioning of the whole system.

The public debate “Political communication in periods of crisis: between public interest and narrow political interest” is the 41st of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
