Driver who mortally hit pedestrian in Botanica tried to flee

The driver, who fatally struck a pedestrian in Botanica district on Wednesday morning, tried to flee, but was detained by the police. He refused to be breathalyzed. In the meantime, the identity of the pedestrian was established. This is a 76-year-old man who was crossing the street legally, IPN reports.

The General Police Inspectorate said the accident occurred at around 07.00 a.m. Arriving at the scene, the police officers determined that a 26-year-old man who was driving an Audi car registered in another state hit he pedestrian who was crossing the street lawfully.

The struck man died on the spot. The driver tried to leave the scene, but was caught. The young man refused to take the breath test and biological samples will be taken from him to determine whether or not he was under the influence of alcohol or other substances. He is to be detained for 72 hours.

Following the impact, the car involved in the accident overturned, being wrecked. Vehicle traffic on the section of Dacia Blvd between Hristo Botev St and Traian Blvd was restricted.

A criminal case was started to establish all the circumstances of the accident.
