The leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon said the amendments made to the law on the prosecution service are an attempt by the government to name a person obedient to the Party of Action and Solidarity as Prosecutor General. Dodon is sure that the new Prosecutor General will start criminal cases by order against opponents of the power. He said the Prosecutor General was obliged by President Maia Sandu to harass the opposition with criminal cases and, as Stoianoglo refused to do this, he fell into the government’s disgrace, IPN reports.

Igor Dodon accused the current government of trying at any cost to gain control over the Prosecutor General’s Office so as to later use this institution as a cudgel against the political opponents.

“The presidential administration is under external control. Foreign advisers instruct them how to speak. The goal is to do the same in relation to the Prosecutor’s Office, but they were confronted by a Gagauz man with character and uprightness, a professional and I don’t say this because I named him. Stoianoglo told them that there is the state Republic of Moldova in which one has to answer if they broke the law and will not answer if they didn’t break the law. He was invited to account for his acts and was told to start a criminal case against Dodon,” Igor Dodon stated in the program “The Fourth Estate” on N4 TV channel.

The politician expressed his conviction that the accusations made by Stoianoglo, concerning the campaign launched to denigrate the PGO with the involvement of foreign diplomats, are truthful. He said the recent amendments made to the law on the prosecution service are aimed at appointing a person who would fulfill the orders of PAS as Prosecutor General.

“Stoianoglo stated what everyone knew – that some of the prosecutors went to the U.S. ambassador to be counseled. The information presented by the Prosecutor General was certified by Europol as they deciphered the information from cellphones. Why does everyone keep silent now? This information was verified and certified by Europeans. But the Europeans forgive those from PAS anything. Look what they do to the law on the prosecution service. Millions of euros from the Europeans was injected into this law and now they amend it as they want to replace Stoianoglo.  They do it because they need there a cousin who would start criminal cases against the oppositions,” stated Igor Dodon.

Under the new law on the prosecution service, the Prosecutor General’s activity is examined by a special commission. If this is assessed as “unsatisfactory”, the Superior Council of Prosecutors suggests that the President should dismiss the Prosecutor General.
