A female obstetrician gynecologist of the Ungheni Maternity Hospital was given a two-year suspended sentence for malpractice. Owing to the actions taken by the doctor, a woman remained without her uterus and cervix after giving birth, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, it happened on March 18, 2020. While in the delivery ward, the doctor took an erroneous decision to use suction in the case of a woman in labor. The woman and the fetus were affected. The woman suffered hemorrhage and severe hemorrhagic shock and underwent surgery the next day, having her uterus and cervix removed.

The consequences were classed as serious bodily injuries. The doctor was banned from practicing for a period of three year and was obliged to pay over 64,000 lei damages and court costs.

The sentence is not final and can be challenged in the Chisinau Appeals Court.
