Most of the patients who are transferred under intensive therapy with severe forms of COVID-19 are not vaccinated. Doctors of the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Moșneaga” say a large part of the patients with severe forms of the disease are older persons who refused to be immunized and whose chances of survival are slim. In a public debate at IPN, doctor Ala Rusnac said all the frontline health workers are overtired and the role of society is to persuade those who refuse to get vaccinated to do it, IPN reports.

Doctors of the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Moșneaga” said a part of the patients  with COVID-19 who are under intensive care lose the struggle with the disease. Such a drama is due to the late visit to a doctor and to the refusal to get a vaccine.

“Patients with severe and very severe forms of the disease are transferred under intensive care. These are not yet divided by the variant of the virus that they contracted. It is just a more serious manifestation of a disease caused by the coronavirus. In the treatment of a patient with a severe form of COVID-19, doctors act according to the way in which the disease manifests itself and cure depending on the health problems experienced by the patient. Breathing problems are among the first symptoms. Treatment also depends on the concomitant diseases suffered by the patient,” stated Ala Rusnac, intensive care physician at “Timofei Moșneaga” Hospital.

To avoid an exponential rise in the cases of COVID-19 after the winter holidays given the appearance of the new Omicron variant, in most of the European states doctors recommend avoiding crowded places, taking part in public events only with the presence of a COVID-19 certificate, two-dose vaccination in the case of unvaccinated ones and administration of boosters.

“The patients under intensive therapy are in a very serious state. Those who can analyze things and speak tell us that there was no one who could persuade them to get vaccinated or they didn’t know or didn’t have time. When we ask them if they will get a vaccine after they get well, most of them say they will. After two years of pandemic, the doctors are exhausted. Furthermore, the population is unwilling to get vaccinated. We cannot understand why the people avoid a protection method when they know there is a danger. Many are admitted to intensive care units and not always survive, unfortunately. We must try and persuade the population to get a vaccine,” stated Ala Rusnac.

The public debate ”New Omicron variant: inheritance of 2021 for 2022. What should we do with it?” is the 220th installment of the series of debates “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates”. IPN’s project is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
