Discussing frozen conflicts within UN will contribute to settling Transnistrian conflict – Vladimir Voronin

Having the issue regarding frozen conflicts in the Black Sea region and south of Caucasian region included in the agenda of the 61st UN General Assembly speaks about the fact that this issue needs to be debated globally at the world’s most prestigious body, a declaration of Moldovan President, Vladimir Voronin, says. According to the head of state, the discussion within UN are not aiming at changing the present format of negotiations on settling the Transnistrian problem, renouncing at those constructive proposals made at different moments by the observers of the negotiation process. The aim of it is to correctly inform the whole international community about the situation in the regions of frozen conflicts, including Transnistria, about the nature of this conflict and purpose of the initiatives proposed or implemented by Chisinau, about the perspectives of a definitive settlement of the conflict, about the role of certain participants in this process and about the causes which make impossible the conflict’s settlement, the declaration specifies. According to the president, the problem related to the risks such conflicts generate in the Black Sea region and in the southern Caucasian region, about the violation of human rights in the regions controlled by separatist regimes, about the danger of ecologic catastrophes in the zones where other country’s munitions and armament is kept illegally will be tackled at the Assembly. Voronin hopes that through this Assembly he will manage to strengthen the efforts of the international community and ensuring peaceful, correct and definite settlement of the Transnistrian dispute. UN General Assembly adopted the decision to include on the agenda of 61st session an additional topic regarding long-lasting conflicts in GUAM area and involvement the for the sake of international peace, security and development. This decision was made at the solicitation of GUAM member countries. 16 countries voted in favor of introducing the issue on the agenda, 15 pleaded against, and 65 abstained from voting. According to the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, this step is counterproductive, and aims at destroying the present formats used in the settlement process of the conflicts from Transnistria, Karabach, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, where the Russian Federation is actively participating in.
