Some experts consider that Moldova will only gain from the appointment of former Georgian President Mihail Saakashvili as governor of Odessa region, while others believe this appointment will cause only instability. The opinions were stated in the talk show “Politics” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.

Journalist Ernest Vardanean considers the appointment of Saakashvili will lead to instability in the region. “Saakashvili may be bait for the Russians so that the war in Ukraine extends and particular forces from outside become involved on the part of Ukraine. I think Saakashvili was named to this post at someone’s instructions as Ukraine is far from being an independent country. Moreover, Odessa is a specific city that lives by its rules, while the thieves in law dictate their own rules. I don’t think that Saakashvilli will accept these rules. Consequently, his appointment will represent a failure. The new governor must be very cautious,” he stated

Constitutional law expert Vitalie Catana considers that Saakashvili’s appointment will ensure stability at the eastern border of Moldova. “Saakashvili is the man, who, as President of Georgia, had many accomplishments, with the fight against corruption being his most important achievement. His appointment as governor of Odessa region would lead to security in the region. No one can suspect Saakashvili of complicity with Moscow. Namely Saakashvili can contribute to balancing out forces in the region and can offer guarantees,” he said.

Valeriu Ostalep, director of the Institute of Diplomatic, Political and Security Studies, said Saakashvili’s appointment will cause a tenser situation in the region. “Saakashvili has nothing in common with Odessa region. The President of Ukraine made a mistake when he named Sakashvili. The message of the former Georgian head of state is provoking for this region. His appointment will bring nothing good to Odessa region or to us,” he stated.

Anatol Taranu, director of the Center of Strategic Research and Political Consultancy “Politicon”, considers Saakashvili’s appointment will cause instability in the region, but this move will be beneficial to Moldova. “The situation in Moldova is now not simple. Our authorities will have to manage the situation skillfully. Saakashvili is inclined to cut with the sword, not with the scalpel. Ukraine became our ally in the Transnistria issue after over 20 years and we must fully profit from this,” he said.
