Today, more than one million Moldovans live permanently abroad. They are well integrated in their chosen country, but keep in touch with their homeland and their communities. And this is because integration in another country and commitments to the country of birth are not mutually exclusive. There can be win-win situations for both countries. The statements belong to the German ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Margret Uebber, and were made during the Diaspora Congress, which takes place in Chisinau.

Margret Uebber noted that the diaspora can play a key role in the development of their country of origin, and not only by sending money. It is, above all, about the transfer of skills, knowledge and experiences. The diaspora can make connections between the two countries, can increase mutual understanding and cooperation. We have to take these voices into account and take advantage of them, the diplomat says. The “Policy Advisory Fund” Program, implemented by the German International Cooperation Agency in Moldova, aims to use this potential in a better, more targeted, more structured way. This makes interaction with the diaspora possible and in this way the Republic of Moldova can come closer to the European Union.

“I am glad to see that the Moldovan Government recognizes this potential. And I welcome the fact that you brought representatives of the diaspora to this event. I congratulate you on this occasion. It is good to discuss how you can join forces and promote the Republic of Moldova. I want to assure you that Germany stands with you and will continue to support such efforts”, said Margret Uebber.

The 10th Diaspora Congress is taking place as part of the Diaspora Days on August 18 and 19. On Saturday, entrepreneurs are expected at the Digital Park to participate in the Diaspora Business Forum, where they will discover economic trends and investment opportunities in the Republic of Moldova. The Diaspora Days will culminate with a theatrical performance at the Chisinau Train Station.

The event takes place with the support of the Policy Advisory Fund Project, financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ Moldova.
