Moldova continues to develop the market economy so that more companies and more citizens in the country can make use of the opportunities available on the European market. This is the message disseminated by representatives of the Moldovan government at a bilateral meeting entitled “Economic criterion, an important stage in the country’s path towards European integration”, which was held on Monday in Brussels, IPN reports.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, officials of a number of public institutions of Moldova and the European officials discussed the way and principles according to which the product market, the financial market and the labor market operate.

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gerasimov assured that the Moldovan authorities aim to build a functional market economy, which is one of the Copenhagen criteria. Gerasimov reminded of the new growth plan for which Moldova received European financial support last week. “This plan will significantly contribute to the economic development of our country, to the improvement of living standards and to our integration into the European Union,” said the Moldovan official.

The interlocutors also discussed the capacities to cope with competitive pressure and market forces in the European Union. Veronica Arpintin, secretary of state of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, said that in the Republic of Moldova “we need to invest in infrastructure, education, governance and to also attract foreign investments so as to create a competitive and dynamic market.” The Moldovan official noted that when the workforce enjoys better education, they will be able to migrate to innovative fields, which could support Moldova’s integration into regional markets.

The bilateral meeting in Brussels was a bilateral screening exercise, an important step in the negotiations on the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. It highlighted Moldova’s firm commitments to reforms and the European Union’s continued support, reads the Ministry of Economic Development’s press release.
