The two-year-old child from the municipality of Ungheni fell into the shaft of the elevator on the sixth floor. Supposedly, the mother put the stroller between the doors to hold the elevator. Those responsible for managing the elevator claim that all the technical inspections were carried out on time, but this fact is to be checked by the investigative bodies. The Municipal Commission for Emergency Situations was convened at the Ungheni mayor’s office.

Contacted by IPN for details, mayor of Ungheni Vitalie Vrabie said that he personally went to the scene of the incident, but also to the hospital, where the child is staying. The Municipal Commission for Emergency Situations that includes all decision-makers was convoked.

Technicians explained that any elevator has security elements and the fact that the elevator cannot start if the doors are not closed is one of them. Something probably did not work. According to the mayor, the incident is examined by the investigative bodies that are to determine how everything happened.

“The building where the incident occurred was built in the 1980s and 1990s and belongs to a carpet factory. All the studios were privatized and, respectively, all the interior municipal networks, including the elevator, are the collective property of the persons who own apartments in the block. The block is managed by an association of owners of privatized homes and is not municipal property,” said the mayor.

After the Commission’s meeting, a number of decisions will be taken, including to carry out checks in apartment buildings and at over a hundred elevators in the town. If it is found that regular checks have not been conducted, these elevators will be made inaccessible.

A two-year-old child was admitted in a critical condition to the Ungheni District Hospital after falling into the elevator shaft in a residential building on Wednesday morning. He is to be transferred by Aviasan to Chisinau. The child’s condition is extremely serious, but stable.
