The decline in the democracy index should worry the political class and also the whole society. As long as the Republic of Moldova continues to follow the path of European integration, to an area where democracy is at home, this decline is disappointing. Such opinions were stated in the program “People’s Council” on 10TV channel, IPN reports.

Political analyst Anatol Taranu said the decline in the democracy index should make the political class follow a particular model of conduct and action because, if things worsen further, the whole European integration movement will be compromised. This happened because the democratic game is not fully respected. The fact that the parliamentary majority was created by suspect methods surely influences the perception existing inside and outside.

Political analyst Corneliu Ciurea said Moldova has always been a democracy with defects. It is important that Moldova continue to be a democracy. “When we say hybrid democracy, we realize that the elections can be partially rigged, but the opposition anyway has chances of winning these elections. A hybrid democracy advantages more those who are in power and creates unequal conditions for the power and the opposition,” stated Corneliu Ciurea. He considers that Moldova could not be different from Ukraine and Georgia, which also have hybrid democracies.

According to the Democracy Index 2017 compiled by British researchers, the state of democracy in Moldova has worsened, slipping from defective democracy to a hybrid regime.
