The three children from Flocoasa village of Cantemir district who died at the end of October suffered poisoning by vapors of the organophosphorus insecticide Valsafid. The commission of inquiry of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection established that the insecticide was used by unauthorized and untrained persons, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Ministry said the insecticide forms part of the first class of toxicity. The Pre-Hospital Medical Assistance Service provided symptomatic medical assistance because the family members informed about the contact with the toxic substance only when they called an ambulance the second time. When they were hospitalized, the volume of emergency medical assistance was coordinated with specialists and the treatment measures taken at the local centers were correct. However, the commission determined that the epidemiological anamnesis in hospital records was incomplete.

The commission requested the National Food Safety Agency to ban the fumigation with toxic preparations in areas near homes without respecting the rules of using these products. It also suggested transmitting the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office and holding accountable those to blame for the tragedy.

Two sisters aged four and 11 and their cousin aged eight died after their grandfather treated the wheat kept in an area close to the room where they were sleeping with insecticide. Their grandmother  and the girls’ mother also suffered poisoning, but survived and were already discharged from the hospital.
