The planned signing of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) with the European Union caused intense disputes between former and current high-ranking officials in the program “Politics” on TV 7 channel. The moderator had to intervene for several times in order to calm things down, IPN reports.

The head of the Parliament’s commission on economy, budget and finance Veaceslav Ionita said the accord will foster trade and the development of the national producers. It was formulated based on internal agreements and the fact that the Moldovan goods will have to go through the accreditation and compliance procedures will facilitate their entry into the Russian market. Also, the imposition of the EU quality standards will stimulate the Moldovan businesses to make products of a high quality.

“I don’t understand who can be dissatisfied with this accord – the producers that will be able to sell their goods in advantageous conditions in the EU, or the domestic consumers who will have access to goods of a high quality and at lower prices,” said Ionita.

On the other hand, ex-Premier Dumitru Braghis said that he sees certain risks in the signing of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, but hopes that the situation will be overcome. “Moldova experienced such a situation when it became a member of the World Trade Organization. There were fears that we will get into a trap of the U.S. imperialism. But years passed and nothing of the kind happened,” he stated.

Visarion Ceshuev, ex-Minister of Privatization and adviser to former Communist President Vladimir Voronin criticized the DCFTA, saying it is perfidious and sly. According to him, this accord will be a trap for the Moldovan producers that will not be able to export to the EU owing to the very strict procedures, and even our cans will disappear.

Ionita reacted harshly to Ceshuev’s statements, while the permanent invitee of the program “Politics” Igor Botan said such assertions are aberrant.
