Ex-minister of foreign affairs of Romania Cristian Diaconescu said the snap parliamentary elections of July 11 are historical. According to the diplomat, the stake of the elections is very big and the election results will reflect the country’s political orientation for a long period of time.

The former minister of foreign affairs of Romania noted that if the new government is not pro-European, the country will distance itself from Romania first of all.

“The orientation to a particular system of values is the stake of these elections. It is a matter of option and it seems that the electorate in the Republic of Moldova is divided symmetrically from this viewpoint. It is a historical moment. If the Republic of Moldova follows another direction than the European one and distances itself from the West, this attitude will be for a long period of time and will be irreversible,” Cristian Diaconescu stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The diplomat expressed his bewilderment at the separation of the pro-European forces in Chisinau from the unionist ones. He believes Romania should be yet more present in the Republic of Moldova, with much larger investments.

“The reintegration idea is a matter related to pro-Europeanism. The Union would actually mean the solving of the roaming problem, the rail gauge problem, the problem of the Union highway. Is it so serious? The Union will derive from the people and Romania should persuade the people. Banca Transilvania is the biggest investment of Romania. Is this everything Romania can do from economic viewpoint to be present here?” asked Diaconescu.

The Romanian diplomat noted the Union of the two states should imply a common agenda that Chisinau and Bucharest will present to all the European chancelleries, both in the West and in the East.
