The Prosecutor General’s Office initiated a criminal case for the usurpation of state power, between June 7 and 14, 2019, by the former government of the Republic of Moldova. The Office says in a press release that on Monday Acting Prosecutor General Dumitru Robu issued an order to this effect.
“Due to factual and legal errors in the order refusing to commence criminal prosecution issued by the former interim Prosecutor General, Igor Popa ,on July 23, 2019, today, it has been canceled,” states the press release.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the investigation will be carried out by a criminal prosecution group, consisting of prosecutors, criminal prosecution officers and investigation officers from different subdivisions of the law enforcement bodies.
On July 25, the Prosecutor General’s Office informed that it had examined the complaint of Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Nastase, Minister of Internal Affairs, registered on June 20, and issued a refusal order to initiate criminal prosecution over the usurpation of state power. Andrei Nastase also demanded that Vlad Plahotniuc be stripped of parliamentary immunity. In the meantime, the former PDM president has quit as MP.
Article 339 (Usurpation of state power) of the Criminal Code stipulates a prison sentence of 10 to 15 years.
