The level of food security in Moldova has decreased significantly. The agrifood products with high biological value such as meat and meat products, milk and dairy products, fruit and berries see the highest stagnation rates, the expert of the Business Consulting Institute (BCI) Victor Moroz said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
The country’s food security is ensured by extending imports. The agricultural sector benefits from about 4% of the investments in fixed capital. The foreign investments in Moldova’s agriculture are even lower, Victor Moroz said.
According to him, immediate measures should be taken to increase production of meat, fruit and other products with a high nutritive value so as to solve the problem of underfeeding and substitute the massive imports of agrifood products.
“Not only Moldova faces such problems. The World Food and Agriculture Organization suggested organizing a summit to discuss the global food security. First of all, they will propose raising the investments in agriculture to 17% - the figure of the 1980s,” the BCI expert said.
The summit will take place on November 16 and 18 in Rome. It is financed by the Saudi Arabia, which will allocate US$2.5 million for such purposes.
