The renovated hall of the National Philharmonic must have perfect acoustics for an academic music orchestra, the building must be built in a classical style both inside and on the outside, have a spacious lobby with portraits of illustrious musicians that brought fame to the Philharmonic. The suggestions were made at a press conference held to announce an international contest for architectural solutions to rehabilitate the Seghei Lunchevici Philharmonic.

According to Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan, Moldova has no hall with “perfect acoustics”, therefore the Philharmonic must satisfy this need and become “a true musical instrument”. “We want a modern hall, a philharmonic that is a prestige, a value for Moldova, it would be the best in the whole Eastern Europe, and for that we must formulate our ideas exactly, reach a common idea agreed by specialists, musicians and the whole society”, said Sergiu Prodan.

The minister added that the desired result is to find the best design houses in the world that have experience in the field of concert halls, modern acoustics and concert visuals. At the end of this competition, a well-defined project should be established so that costs and the actual construction schedule can be estimated later. The contest winner will be announced on March 1, 2023.

A board comprising artists and businesspeople will supervise the contest. The potential participans will be able to find more details on the project’s website at  rising.philharmonic.md.

“We hope that we will re-enter our beautiful home, that it will be rebuilt and regain that name of the most important music-concert institution,” said Svetlana Bivol, general director of the National Philharmonic.

The National Philharmonic  was destroyed in a fire on September 24, 2020.
