The last legislature was the twentieth, but the next one will be the tenth, as decided today by the Constitutional Court following a request from Democratic lawmaker Sergiu Sîrbu.

During Saturday’s debates on the confirmation of the February 24 election results in the Constitutional Court, Sîrbu recalled that the numbering in use was set in the Soviet era and argued that it would make more sense to reset it since the 1991 Independence.

“We should begin numbering starting with Independence and have independent parliaments. I believe this would be a symbolical thing”, said the lawmaker.

The representatives of other parties attending left the matter at the Court’s discretion, except for Socialist legal counselor Maxim Lebedinschi, who was concerned this could create confusion in telling which legislature adopted which laws. Sîrbu replied that the practice of indicating the legislature number on bills was scrapped in 2018 and such confusions shouldn’t arise.
