A 13-year-old boy diagnosed with a life-threatening form of bacterial meningitis last Saturday is now receiving intensive treatment at the Chisinau Children’s Hospital for Contagious Diseases, as his condition has improved to moderate, the Ministry of Health said in a press release.

Upon admission, the Chisinau boy displayed low blood pressure, high fever, nausea and vomiting, pale skin, and multiple hemorrhagic rashes on his face, neck and back. It is not yet known if the patient had been vaccinated.

Pyogenic meningitis, also referred as bacterial meningitis, is a life-threatening infectious disease affecting the membranes covering the brain and the spinal cord, with an elevated mortality and disability rates. Its symptoms may include severe headaches, neck stiffness, sudden high fever, altered mental status, and photophobia, among others. Some forms of meningitis are preventable by immunization.
