The Communist Party has requested the Constitutional Court to suspend a set of amendments imposing caps on some local taxes and annulling some others. They also demand the “unconditional” dismissal of Liberal-Democrat Veaceslav Ionita from the post of chairman of Parliament's Economy and Finance Commission, IPN reports.

MP Eduard Musuc told a press conference today that the party also requested the Prosecutor General's Office to start criminal proceedings in relation to the amendments made to the Fiscal Code, as the Communists claim the measures were adopted in a non-transparent manner and were tainted by corruption. Musuc stated that the move of capping and annulling local taxes is a “direct assault” against local authorities which confirms “a total abandonment” of the decentralization process.

“This decision, adopted in a non-transparent and abusive manner, strips the (local) budgets of over 200 million lei, which will render them unable to provide services of good quality to the people”, said Musuc. He went on to add that the decision was adopted in the interest of the big business and to the detriment of the small-scale business and the people.

In another move, the Communist Party promised to propose a bill allowing local authorities to complain to the Constitutional Court without mediation.
