The Communist Party (PCRM) won’t manage to assemble Parliament for an urgent meeting to set the date for a referendum on Moldova’s accession to the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union, thinks political analyst Viorel Cibotaru. He told Info-Prim Neo that this initiative is merely a “propagandistic move”. “Our country has more problems than considering holding a pseudo-referendum. In my opinion, this is propaganda. As far as the chances of holding this referendum go, I can say that it’s a complicated track. They wanted to hold a referendum before, but didn’t manage to have all of their procedures consistent with the legislation. It is a ponderous thing; there must be a political perspective that might motivate this. Even if they respect all of the legal procedures, the parliamentary discussion is imminent, and the only conclusion is that there isn’t enough policy substance for this initiative.”,said Cibotaru. The analyst thinks that if a referendum were to occur, the results would be completely different when compared to the apparently credible polls. “People aren’t informed enough. The results of a referendum would be very different if an awareness campaign were to be organized. I think that PCRM does exclusively to attract attention to its initiatives. It is an action directed towards communicating with its own electorate and nothing more.” observed Viorel Cibotaru. PCRM stated earlier today that they are starting the procedure to convoke Parliament on September 13, after over 200,000 citizens have delegated them to organize a referendum on Moldova's accession to the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union.
