On the Occasion of the International Mother Earth Day marked on April 22, the Coalition of Environmental NGOs “Earth Day” will carry out tree planting activities in the municipality of Chisinau and in the country’s districts. Representatives of the coalition called upon the population and the authorities to mobilize and take part in greening activities so as to improve the general state of green areas.
About 600 trees will be planted in the park of Chisinau’s Rascani district this week. Birdcages will be set up in the city’s green areas on April 1, while the banks of the Byk River will be cleaned on April 11-12. The coalition will also hold a roundtable meeting titled “Present and future of the green areas in Chisinau city”. Educative hours and contests on energy and biomass will be held in the municipal pre-university education institutions.
In a news conference at IPN, Vladimir Garaba, head of the Chisinau Local Organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova, said the situation in Chisinau is worrisome. The trees in parks are old and dry, but the authorities do nothing to regenerate the parks. Hundreds of trees are cut on the streets that are repaired, while the authorities say only four-five trees had been removed.
National Environmental Center representative Iuliana Cantaragiu said the Chisinau City Hall must devote greater attention to greening activities. “The local authorities should make effort to protect the environment in the city,” she stated. The representative of the Association “Eco-Contact” Natalia Guranda said the people should join the volunteers and authorities in the greening activities.
The coalition “Earth Day” was founded in 2000 to promote sustainable development and a healthy lifestyle.
