The Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) will come together for a meeting on September 20 with 11 items on the agenda. The councillors intend to examine a number of issues related to the allocation of additional financial resources to the preschool and pre-university education institutions and to approve the regulations concerning the awarding of municipal merit scholarships and nominative compensations for paying the heating charges. They will also decide whether to allocate money for carrying out works in “Valea Morilor” Park. Though not according to the agenda, the Council will possibly try again to elect the CMC chairperson and the deputy mayors of Chisinau. During a televised programme earlier this week, the leaders of AMN, PDM and PPCD said that they are ready to vote in favour of the PL president Mihai Ghimpu for the post of CMC chairman in order to overcome the crisis that has lasted for several months. Even if the majority coalition in the Council votes in the same way as the party leaders, it would be difficult to elect the deputy mayors and CMC because all the Council’s members must be present at the meeting and vote for the proposed candidates. Informed sources told Info-Prim Neo that Oazu Nantoi, councilman on behalf of PDM, is not in the country and will return next week. On the other hand, the leader of the Democratic group in CMC Alexandru Tanase, who on September 18 announced his intention to leave PDM, at the last meeting of September 6 said that the councillors from the coalition play the role of figurants in the scenario regarding the election of Ghimpu as chairman of the City Council. Tanase also said that he would not tolerate such a situation. If no agreement is reached, the Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca could put forward his own candidates for deputy mayors, not the ones jointly chosen by the four non-communist parties that formed the majority group. At the meeting of September 6, Chirtoaca refused to propose candidates for deputy mayors, saying he needs time to see if the earlier agreements of the coalition are still valid.
