The Chisinau Municipal Council decided with majority vote to include in the supplementary order of the day of today’s meeting the issue concerning the election of Chisinau deputy mayors. The decision was finally taken, although Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said he wasn’t ready to field candidates. The proposal was made by the councillor of the Moldova Noastra Alliance faction, Oleg Cernei, who invoked the necessity of electing the administration of the capital for a better activity of the local authorities. The liberal and Christian-democrat councillors were against the proposal. CMC Secretary Vladimir Sarban specified that the local councillors are entitled to include such an issue in the order of the day. However, the prerogative of proposing candidates to the post of deputy mayor belongs to the mayor. Democrat councillor Alexandru Tanase regrets the fact that the majority coalition formed by 4 parties on July 24 is not viable. In his opinion, the tense situation in the Council is maintained because the decisions are made by party leaders and not by the councillors that entered the coalition. Tanase further stated that many of the councillors object to the idea of electing the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu as chairman of the Council. Pavel Caba, the leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance, suggested the councillors to postpone the issue concerning the appointment of the CMC Chair until the Parliament passes the Law on Chisinau City Status. At the same time, Caba said it is crucial to elect the deputy mayors and appoint the district heads.
