Chisinau suburbs vote massively for communist councillors

Chisinau’s suburbs voted massively for the Party of Communists (PCRM) in elections for the Municipal Council, and less for the ruling party’s candidate for Mayor General, Veaceslav Iordan. With 99% of the ballots being counted, PCRM received in the municipality of Chisinau as many as 63,275 votes, or 30.1% of the total, marking a 3% increase compared with the previous preliminary results that excluded a large part of information from the polling stations in the suburban localities. The “Moldova Noastra” Alliance Party polled 11.86% of the vote, PD – 6.69%, PPCD – 6.61%, PSD – 3.32%, PL – 17.87%, PSL – 1.47%, PNL – 2.84%, the Electoral Bloc “Patria-Rodina-Ravnopravie” – 3.26%, PDS – 5.19%. Based on the recent poll results, Veaceslav Iordan’s share of votes decreased by 0.33%. He was voted by 27.9% of the voters in the municipality. The PL candidate for Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca polled 24.32%, registering a slight increase by 0.66% as against the previous results. In the 25 May 2003 elections, the ruling party received 41.9% of the votes cast for councillors, while the PCRM candidate for mayor at that time, Vasile Zgardan, garnered in the first round 46.8% of the vote.
