The epidemiological situation in the municipality of Chisinau is assessed as hazardous due to the increased risk of infection with COVID-19. The number of confirmed cases has increased and Chisinau is on yellow alert by incidence, the chief health officer of Chisinau said in the ordinary meeting of officials of municipal services.

Boris Gîlca stated that the Omicron variant prevails and affects mostly children. About 90 children with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 are now at the Municipal Hospital of Contagious Diseases for Children. Also, there are 21 pregnant women with COVID-19 at Maternity Hospital No. 2, IPN reports.

“We have the same wave of Omicron that is indeed very contagious, primarily for children, but it does not cause serious forms. Why are the children worst hit? Because they, in most of the cases, form that section of the population that hadn’t been vaccinated. I take this occasion to remind the citizens to get a vaccine,” said the chief health officer.

According to him, the largest part of the population got two vaccine doses, but forgot about the booster dose that is administered at any medical center in the municipality. Protection against infection or a serious form of disease can be ensured only by getting a booster dose.

The Ministry of Health said that over 520,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported so far, 193,000 of which in the municipality of Chisinau. Since the start of the pandemic, the number of deaths associated with the novel coronavirus has amounted to 11 567.

More than 2.1 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered by now. Half of those vaccinated got both of the doses.  Almost 300,000 got also the booster dose.
