The faction of the Liberal Party (PL) in the Chisinau City Council (CMC) today announced it was moving into opposition against the newly formed coalition, composed of the Communists, Christian-Democrats, Humanist-Democrats, and the Social Democrats, Info-Prim Neo reports. PL president Mihai Ghimpu told a news conference that after a multitude of illegalities that occurred in the Council, the conspiracy plotted by the communist government ended in the usurpation of authority in the city. According to him, the parties that form the freshly forged “monstrous coalition” have all along impeded the Council from acting in the interest of the citizens. Mihai Ghimpu announced that PL would challenge in court the decision on his dismissal and on the election of Eduard Musuc as CMC chairman. “If we discover that certain projects are promoted to favor certain groups or if we notice that they are illegal, we will take action against them”, declared Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca of Chisinau, who is also the vice president of the Liberal Party. The mayor foresees that the future activity of the Council will be marked by an apparent calmness and cooperation between the members of the fresh coalition. “The projects proposed for adoption will be the same as the ones proposed by the PL, except now they will be adopted by the new coalition. So, people will be told that the former coalition was inefficient, while the new one is able to work without fighting”, said Chirtoaca, adding that behind the apparent calmness, certain councilors will be pushing their interests. Corina Fusu, the leader of the PL faction in the CMC, says that the “act of betrayal” by the Social-Democrats sheds more light on the true face of the leadership of this party, which during the last summer's election campaign pronounced itself as anticommunist. “They were used as a tool to disband the democratic coalition”, declared Fusu. “The Communist Party resorts to such methods because of its weakness and out of fear to lose the elections in 2009”. The Liberals say that the PSD's shift to the Communist camp is an extra proof that the democratic parties must not forge alliances with the groups led by persons who were once Communist activists or cooperated with them during the Communist regime. Eduard Musuc was elected as chairman of the City Council on June 6 with the vote of the Communists, Christian-Democrats, Humanist-Democrats, the Social Democrats, and the Ravnopravie faction. The same councilors sacked Mihai Ghimpu from office.
