The current Mayor of Chisinau, deputy chairman of the Liberal Party Dorin Chirtoaca and the representative of the Party of Socialists Zinaida Grecheanyi are the candidates for the mayoralty of Chisinau who will compete in the second round of voting and they have equal chances of winning, executive director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO) Sergiu Ostaf said in the talk show “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.

According to Ostaf, the opponents of the two, who could outstrip them, are the Party of Communists’ candidate Vasile Chirtoca and the Liberal Democratic Party’s candidate Serafim Urechean, but the chances of the last two are slim. “It will be a geopolitical vote. A large part of the supporters of the political right, even if they are very disappointed in Dorin Chirtoaca’s performance as a mayor, will vote for him again so as to prevent the Socialists’ candidate from winning. The Liberal Party probably banks on this. Dorin Chirtoaca deepened ever more the division in society. Though he had enough time, he didn’t manage to attract the supporters of the left and the center. Those who support the right had great expectations of Chirtoaca, but these were at most 30% met,” he stated.

The CReDO director said the future Chisinau Municipal Council will be powerfully divided and will encounter difficulties in adopting decisions. ‘The Chisinau Council will equally consist of representatives of parties of the left and of parties of the right. The councilors of the left could even form a majority in the Council. These will represent mainly the Party of Socialists, the Party of Communists and Renato Usatyi’s “Partidul Nostru”. The team of councilors of the right will be even more segmented. Most of these will represent the Liberal Party, followed by those of the electoral bloc “PPEM – Iurie Leanca” and of the Liberal Democratic Party. Civic activist Oleg Brega and several more candidates on behalf of the Party “Democratia Acasa” could also enter the Chisinau Council. Brega’s presence on the Council would ensure maximum transparency in the Council’s work,” stated Ostaf.
