President Maia Sandu said that only through access to culture and reading, the mentality can be changed and generations of free-thinking people can be formed. “The children who read, the educated young people, who choose theater, books, harmonious development are tomorrow’s adults who will choose the word instead of the gun, will have the courage to defend the learned values and will build a society where there is respect and understanding,” the head of state said in a message issued on the occasion of the National Day of Culture, IPN reports.

Maia Sandu noted that in 2024 too, Bookfest Chisinau will be held under the High Patronage of the Presidents of Romania and Moldova. A higher number of high-quality festivals and events have been staged the past few years, attracting a larger audience, both in the country and abroad.

“During this winter vacation, I met with a group of students from Chisinau who this year went to the first grade and together we browsed and read the children’s books we have on the shelves of the library in the Presidential Place. Interest in reading, especially in children, and access to high-quality books must be supported in all ways and at all levels,” said President Sandu.

The National Day of Culture was instituted in April 2012 and aims to promote national culture, authentic cultural values, as well as artistic personalities from the field of culture.
