The film “Carbon”, directed by Ion Borș, won the “Best Feature Film” award at the Filmmakers Gala 2024, while the film’s director was named the best director of the current edition. The dramatic comedy set in Moldova in 1992, in the immediate vicinity of the hot spots of the conflict on the Nistru, also won the awards for best soundtrack and best screenplay. The event this year was held at the Palace of the Republic in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Attending the ceremony, Virgiliu Mărgineanu, president of the Moldovan Filmmakers Union, said that the film has unimaginable powers. Besides the fact that it transposes a story to images, the film manages to gather good people around it, to gather film production specialists on the set, to gather partners, economic agents that invest in this film, to gather in cinema halls people who want to find themselves in those stories.

“We have demonstrated in recent years that our films are popular, wanted, in demand not only in the Republic of Moldova, not only in the European Union, but also overseas. Yes, for now in the diaspora, by those who left the Republic of Moldova and want to see our productions, but this is only the first step. And the cinematography fund is exactly that instrument that will enable the guild to develop further,” stated Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan. The official said that this week the Ministry of Culture, together with the colleagues from Parliament, will launch public consultations on the amendment of the cinematography law.

Valentina Iusuphodjaev, director of the Moldovan National Film Center, expressed hope that with the launch of amendments to the cinematography law, many supporters will appear, especially spectators, because they have demonstrated that they want national films and are waiting for these films.

The feature film “Carbon” received the awards for best editing (Sergiu Barajin), for best screenplay (Mariana Starciuc), won the nominations “Best Soundtrack” (Roman Bordei) and “Best Costumes” (Lilia Ixari).
