Businessman Veaceslav Platon was sentenced to another 12 years behind bars in the second criminal case started against him over active corruption and swindle attempt. The court also obliged the culprit to pay a fine of 300,000 lei. Thus, Veaceslav Platon could serve a total of 30 years in jail as he got 18 years in another case earlier, IPN reports.

The sentence was pronounced in the absence of Platon, who wasn’t brought to the hearing for unknown reasons. Prosecutor Alexandru Cernei told the press that the sentence is milder than the prosecution requested. When the defendant is removed from the trial, the sentence is pronounced in his presence or is communicated to this.

Veaceslav Platon was arrested in July 2016 on charges of swindle and money laundering that caused over 800 million lei damage to Banca de Economii. At the end of this April, the businessman was sentenced to 18 years in jail and was obliged to pay 869 million lei damages. Veaceslav Platon pleads not guilty.

Recently, the businessman’s lawyers, in a news conference at IPN, said the criminal case started against their client was transmitted to judges by fixing the distribution process and, as a result, the case didn’t reach an independent and impartial court. Therefore, all the judgments assed by judges in the case of Platon are illegal, including the sentence.
