The administration of Gagauzia will consider the possibility of making Bulgarian an official language in the autonomous territorial unit. In a working meeting of Gagauzia’s Executive Committee, the region’s Governor Mihail Formuzal said the proposal was put forward by a group of inhabitants of settlements where the Bulgarians represent a significant part of the population, IPN reports.
Before taking a definitive decision, the region’s administration will hold consultations with the public opinion, employees of the education system and the scientific community. Besides, there will be held roundtable meetings involving experts.
There are 8,000 Bulgarians in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. This is about 5% of the region’s population.
Under the law on the special legal status of Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri), the official languages of the region are Moldovan, Gagauz and Russian. The law provides that any other language can be used on the territory of Gagauzia alongside the official languages.
