Following the accession of Romania to EU, the interest of the smugglers to cross Moldova’s borders is higher. They will try to get into the European space through the border of Romania. This statement was made by the British MP, president of the International Association for Business and Parliament (IABP) Bruce George in Chisinau on Wednesday, January 31.
George told an international conference entitled “Integrated management of borders: facilitating trade and increasing security” that Romania did not set a proper border security system yet. At the same time, he considers that the geographical position of Moldova is very convenient for the networks dealing with contraband and trafficking in human beings, which have created tracks on this territory.
The cited source said that Moldova does not have a very good border security system, and therefore the situation needs to be improved. Protecting borders is a complex action that includes the interaction of several structures that should be well-prepared, he stated.
Anatol Donciu, representative of the Centre for Combating Economic Crime and Corruption said that the situation at the border can be described by 2-3 types of relevant offences. The first one is the contraband, followed by corruption, trafficking in human beings and drugs.
The international conference was organised by IABP-Moldova under the patronage of the Parliament and of the British Embassy in Chisinau. The conclusions of the conference, and the speeches delivered will be included in a brochure and handed out to specialised bodies.
The International Association for Business and Parliament (IABP) is an international professional network of up to 20 national Business and Parliament chapters, which fosters mutual understanding; transparent and effective relationships between businesses and parliamentarians with the ultimate objective of informing economic policy and legislation for the benefit of the whole national economy. IABP works in Moldova since October 2005.
