All those who want to bid farewell and render homage to the first President of the Republic of Moldova Mircea Snegur can go to the Nativity Metropolitan Cathedral on Friday evening, starting at 6pm, and to the Palace of the Republic on Saturday, starting at 10am, IPN reports.

September 16 was declared a day of national mourning. The funerals will be held with state honors.

Moldova’s first President will be buried at the Central Cemetery situated on Armenească St in Chisinau.

Mister Snegur lived in historic times and played an essential role in promoting the independence, freedom and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova. He pleaded for certitude and verticality for the Romanian language and the tricolor – values that united the people in thinking and feelings and these came together in the Great National Assembly Square. The President’s speech given before the people on August 27, 1991 inspired confidence in the free and democratic future of the country. “Long live, independent Moldova!” – these are the words with which he ended his address and that united the Moldovans during the National Renaissance years and will guide us too in building a decent future for our children and for the Republic of Moldova,” says the obituary published on the website of the President of the Republic of Moldova.

“A politician, statesman, agronomist-scientist, Mircea Snegur will remain in collective memory as the Man who was at the cradle of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova. We express sincere condolences to the family, relatives and all those who knew and praised him and to those for whom the name Mircea Snegur is history. May his soul rest in peace”.

Mircea Snegur was 83.
