Soils and waters in Moldova are in a disastrous state due to plowing and use of chemicals, says Alexandru Brătuțel, an expert in biotechnologies at the Prometheus Experimental Center. In a press conference on Tuesday, he pleaded for the authorities and public alike to understand the importance of biotechnologies, following the example of Romanian organic farmers.
Brătuțel pleaded for a close partnership with Romania in the process of applying innovative agricultural practices. Plasma agriculture is developing well in Romania, says the expert. Implementing this type of agriculture in Moldova, without chemicals and plowing, “will only bring benefits”.
According to Alexandru Brătuțel, the situation in the geographical area in which Moldova is located is disastrous due to the “exaggerated use” of chemicals and deep plowing practices, which leads to “very serious consequences”.
It is necessary to move from problem management to change management, says Alexandru Brătuțel. According to the expert, we are at a crossroads: “choose biotechnologies, sustainable practices of the future or continue down the wrong path. Sustainable practices would mean reduced expenses, improved soil structure and other benefits”.
Alexandru Brătuțel added that the most widespread agricultural practices today destroy the soil. The expert laid out a US road map for soil restoration, with actions to invest in soil health to achieve economic benefits, and more. In his opinion, Moldova also needs such a document. “The right path is natural agriculture, which can provide agricultural products clearly superior in quality and quantity, with minimal technological expenses and labor, with the maximum involvement of nature’s potential”.
