Representatives of the now-defunct Banca de Economii (BEM), standing in the Ilan Shor case as the injured party, has been requested to provide additional documents to assist a court-ordered financial expert investigation. This was decided today by Cahul Court of Appeals following a request by the National Judicial Expert Evaluation Center, IPN has learned from an Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson.

Iulian Balan, a lawyer for the businessman-turned-politician, has declined to comment, citing the confidentiality of judicial proceedings, as has been customary throughout the case’s examination by the Cahul tribunal.

Meanwhile, a crowd of Shor Party supporters demonstrated outside the Court building to demand “due process (for Ilan Shor) and punishment for the actual perpetrators of the bank fraud”.

The next court sitting has been slated for June 26.

In June 2017, the Buiucani District Court sentenced Shor to seven years and a half in jail for causing considerable damage to the state by swindle and abuse of trust. The same day, he was released from house arrest on bail pending a definitive sentence. The original sentence was appealed by both the defense and the prosecution, as well as BEM. The case reached the Cahul Court only in February 2018 and has seen multiple delays since.

Following the February 24 elections, Ilan Shor was elected a member of Moldova’s Parliament.
