The Kingdom of Belgium today is opening its Embassy in Moldova. This was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu in a joint press conference with his Belgian counterpart Hadja Lahbib. According to Nicu Popescu, the opening of the embassy will help to further strengthen the network of diplomatic relations between the two states.

Nicu Popescu described the bilateral relationship with Belgium as very good and dynamic. During the meeting with the Belgian official, they discussed Moldova’s European aspirations and EU accession efforts. Popescu emphasized in this context the fact that Belgium will hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of next year.

The two officials also discussed about the war in Ukraine, its impact on Moldova, and ways of mitigating its effects, including through joint preparations for the next meeting of the Moldova Support Platform, to take place in Chisinau in October. Also in October, a number of Moldovan local officials will visit Belgium for training and experience transfer.

More than 170 million euros from Belgium are invested in Moldova and about 120 companies with Belgian capital operate in Moldova. The opening of the embassy in Chisinau will help deepen the economic partnership between the two states, Nicu Popescu added.

Hadja Lahbib, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Foreign Trade of the Kingdom of Belgium, declared that today’s event marks a new stage in the relationship with Moldova. It is an important gesture of partnership that provides a platform for greater diplomatic engagement and not only.

The official noted that Russia’s war upset the balance in the region, and Moldova has so far courageously resisted destabilization attempts, lies and aggressive propaganda against the people who aspire to a European future.

Hadja Lahbib noted that Belgium is ready to stand with Moldova in its European journey and offer assistance. The prospect of EU membership will come closer as the necessary reforms are implemented.
