The candidates of the Electoral Bloc of the Communists and the Socialists (BeCS) said that together with the pandemic and last year’s drought, the explosion in prices this year is a very painful blow to the Moldovans. They suggest instituting strict state control over the prices, IPN reports.

In a news conference, Socialist MP Petru Burduja said the fuel prices started to rise last December. During half a year, the prices of gasoline and diesel fuel increased ten times. Now the drivers pay by over 5 lei more per litter of gasoline and by almost 5 lei more per liter of diesel fuel than in November 2020.

The representatives of the BeCS make reference to data of the National Bureau of Statistics, noting that in May 2021, compared with the corresponding period last year, the prices of food products rose by 5%, while of nonfoods by 4.7%. The prices of essential products, such as oil, grew by almost 30%.

Petru Burduja said the prices continue to go up even if the current year is favorable to agricultural in Moldova and there are many vegetables of this year’s crop on the market at present. Medicines also grew more expensive, with the price of some of them doubling. The prices of some of the building materials increased three times on last year and continue to rise weekly.

The MP expressed his concern about the inaction of the public institutions that do not take measures to stabilize the situation as they are waiting for the election outcome. “When we have a President who says that she does not answer for anything, including prices, when we have had an outgoing Government since last December, when we have a nonfunctional Parliament because it was dissolved, there is chaos in the country and the situation is ideal for speculators who started to raise the prices of everything,” stated Petru Burduja.

He noted that the price formation process should be strictly monitored by the state so as to prevent someone from enriching themselves further on account of the impoverishment of the majority of people.
