Bassarabia’s unification with Romania of March 27, 1918 was illegal, as it was not voted via a referendum which would included the people of the Moldovan Democratic Republic (MDR), but decided under military threat, communist MP Victor Stepaniuc stated Friday, December 1, in the Parliament’s sitting, on the occasion of the National Day of Romania.
At the end of the session, Stepaniuc read a statement regarding the constitution of MDR on December 2, 1918, praising its creation.
According to the communist MP, in early January 1918 in the context of the World War I, the Romanian troops overran the MDR with help from belligerent forces. During those tragic days, when some local corrupt MPs had put MDR for auction, most of armed units, workers and peasants bravely fought for their homeland. During those days they defended their defiled liberty, and lots of people were shot when the Romanian belligerent army was asked to leave, said Stepaniuc.
Communist MP also stated that from January 14, 1918 to March 27, under those conditions, the Government and Parliament were deprived of rights and actions, while Sfatul Tarii, morally and psychologically maltreated by the Romanian generals, who in fact governed the MDR, ignored the will of the Moldovan people. Via the document signed on March 27, 1918, the MDR, occupied by four divisions of the Romanian army, was transformed into an autonomous province of the Romanian Kingdom, added Stepaniuc.
The Romanians celebrate their National Day on December 1.
