A railway line connecting the Moldovan town of Bassarabeasca with Berezino in Ukraine has been put into operation after being built from scratch in two months. Originally intended for freight transportation, it could be used for carrying passengers as well in the future.

Officiating at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spînu stated that the new railway section will contribute to the development of the entire region and create jobs.

"Now, in times of war, when our countries have strengthened their forces, we have, after 25 years, given another chance to this railway section which, starting September, will be used for freight transportation, with the possibility to expand it passenger transport in the future”, said Spînu.

Thanks to the new line, beginning in September the Republic of Moldova will be able to export and import goods through the port of Ismail on the Danube, reducing congestion in the port of Reni. Also, Ukraine will be able to export goods to the Republic of Moldova and to the European Union.

The railway line is 23 km long, of which 1.2 kilometers pass through Moldovan territory. The new line will connect Moldova to the ports of Ismail and Bilhorod-Dnistrovsky as well as stations in Artsyz and Zatoka.
