The bank deposit guarantee ceiling this year will be doubled to 100,000 lei, while in 2025 it will be raised to 200,000 lei, as a bill that was given a final reading by Parliament provides, IPN reports.
Under the bill that was drafted by the Government, particular categories of deposits will be covered in the amount of 200% of the deposit protection level during up to three months after the sum is credited or of the date the given deposit can be transferred legally.
Among these categories are private individuals’ deposits resulting from residential real estate transactions and the sums deposited as compensation as a result of divorce, retirement, firing, disability, and death, as insurance or compensation for damage caused by offence or illegal conviction.
The deposits in foreign currencies will be guaranteed by compensating their equivalent in Moldovan leu at the official exchange rate set by the National Bank of Moldova on the date the deposits become unavailable.
According to the authorities, the document transposes the relevant EU Directive and aims to strengthen financial stability by ensuing the guaranteed deposits of banks that are under liquidation are paid on time.
