Average pension covers 83% of minimum subsistence level

The number of pensioners registered with the social protection bodies rose by 10,300 in 2014, to 669,900 at the start of this year. About 76% of all the pensioners are entitled to old-age pensions. The women represent 70.5% of the persons who receive such a pension, IPN reports, quoting the National Bureau of Statistics.

The average old-age pension on January 1, 2015 was 1,114.7 lei, up 6.2% on a year before and up 33% on 2010. The average pension of men was 1,268.1 lei, while of women was 1,050.4 lei.

The average subsistence level for pensioners in 2014 was 1,343.7 lei, by 1.3% higher than in 2013. For pensioners from cities, this was 1,487.4 lei, as opposed to 1,279 lei for pensioners from villages and 1,377.1 lei for those from small towns.

The average monthly old-age pension covers 83% of the minimum subsistence level for this category of people. The men’s pension covers 94% of the minimum subsistence level, while the women’s pension – 78%.

The social assistance service is designed to support the pensioners by ensuring their social protection and security. In 2014, there were about 2,400 social workers who provided home care services for approximately 23,200 pensioners.
