MP Octavian Țîcu, who is the author of the challenge concerning the special status of the Russian language filed to the Constitutional Court, said the law that was declared unconstitutional by the High Court is discriminatory in relation to the Romanians in the Republic of Moldova, who represent 80% of the country’s population, IPN reports.

“The Socialists want to attract all the ethnic minorities of the Republic of Moldova under the umbrella of the Russian language and to counterpose them to the Romanian majority population. We live in a state in which, except for the Transnistrian region over which we do not have a constitutional right, the Romanians represent 80% of the population. This means discrimination against the Romanians,” MP Octavian Țîcu stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

PPPDA MP Dinu Plîngău, another author of the challenge submitted to the CC, considers the Socialists need the law on the functioning of languages on the territory of the Republic of Moldova so as to obtain political benefits among Russian speakers if snap parliamentary elections are held.

“The Russian ethnic minority is the third largest in the Republic of Moldova and the rights of the other minorities, such as Ukrainians, Gagauz people are violated this way,” Dinu Plîngău stated in the same program. He noted the PSRM aims to attract the votes of their traditional supporters in eventual snap parliamentary elections, especially because more pro-Russian parties appeared on the Moldovan political arena.

After the law on the special status of the Russian language was declared unconstitutional, the MPs of the Party of Socialists said they will introduce again into Parliament a bill on the functioning of the languages spoken on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
