The Moldovan authorities know there is problem with frequently cancelled, delayed or even discontinued flights affecting Moldovan passengers and are working hard to solve it, stated President Maia Sandu at the Diaspora Congress on Friday.

“I know it has been more difficult to get home this year because of a lack of flights. First, we faced the problem of the pandemic, which complicated this situation, then the Russian war in Ukraine began, bigger security problems arose, and the problem of returning home or having enough flights to Chisinau became extremely complicated”, said Maia Sandu.

The authorities discuss this issue practically every week. “Unfortunately, our efforts so far have not yielded sufficient results, but it is a topic on our agenda and we hope to be able to secure as many flights as possible. Please know that we take into account the number of Moldovans in each country and try to prioritize solving this problem starting from the greatest needs”, said the president.

The president also spoke about the progress made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration in addressing a number of issues previously signaled by the Moldovan diaspora. “As you know, from January 1, 2023, consular fees have been reduced by 50%, and I am glad that we have a fulfilled promise here. I would like to point out that the consular fee for passport renewal for minors has been excluded. We want all the children who are born in our families abroad to have a Moldovan passport. This is not only an identity document, but also a symbolic and emotional connection with the homeland, with the Republic of Moldova”, said Maia Sandu.

Also, now members of the diaspora can opt for several instruments for paying consular fees, and a common online appointment system is being implemented in a number of embassies and diplomatic missions of Moldova.
