The merger of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office (APO) with the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) is one of the options examined by the authorities to strengthen the justice sector. In a press briefing, Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that the merger of the two institutions and other institutional models are to be discussed on the parliamentary platform with the involvement of all stakeholders, IPN reports.
"The goal is to identify the best practices for the fight against corruption and organized crime, and this requires a systemic approach," noted the minister.
In the short term, one of the first solutions found is to combine the investigative efforts at the level of the specialized section of the Prosecutor General's Office, which can take over the examination of complex cases of political corruption and organized crime.
"Another follow-up solution is for this section, which was recently created, as a result of the reorganization of the Prosecutor General's Office system – the Section for Combating Corruption and Money Laundering – to be expanded with additional staff from the specialized prosecutors' offices," said Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
The specialized prosecutors' offices will be eventually merged into a single institution without interruptions, with the transfer of all prosecutors, with the continuation of their work and the maintenance of the cases under investigation, noted the minister.
The examined models will be presented to the Parliament, and public debates will be held on this platform, to which all the interested parties will be invited.
