Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, called on the Council of Europe to support Moldova’s efforts to interrupt the vicious circle of impunity for the human rights violations in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova and noted that the implementation of the ECHR decisions is a first step in this regard. Aureliu Ciocoi made such a call in the 131st Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe that was held in a videoconferencing format, IPN reports.
According to the Government’s press service, the acting Premier devoted special attention to the European Convention on Human Rights, namely to the execution of the ECHR judgments by the states, which is an element of crucial importance in the context of “gray areas” in the protection of the basic human rights and freedoms on the continent.
Aureliu Ciocoi spoke about the serious human rights situation in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, primarily about the situation of the local Moldovan-administered, Romanian-language schools, and reaffirmed Moldova’s commitment to continue supporting the efforts to identify a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Transnistrian conflict by observing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders.
The official also spoke about the importance of reaffirming the commitment of the Council of Europe member states to respect, promote and protect the common principles and values on which the organization is based, namely democracy, human rights and the rule of law. He underlined the role played by the Council and its mechanisms in strengthening the democratic institutions, with Moldova benefitting from valuable assistance through the Council of Europe Action Plan for 2021 – 2024 and the Partnership for Good Governance. A special role in making headway in the justice sector reform was played by the High Level Group of Experts in Justice of the Council of Europe.
