The press in the Republic of Moldova in 2024 treated mostly issues related to women, including women in a difficult situation or those with success stories. Other targeted categories were the elderly and the people with disabilities, IPN reports, quoting a monitoring report by the Association of Independent Press (API).

The study shows that as regards inclusion and diversity, among the social categories about which the least materials were written are LGBT people, former prisoners, Roma people and people with HIV/AIDS.

By topics, the Moldovan media outlets offered the public more news and reports on social sector issues, followed by materials about politics.

In 2024, a number of media outlets saw an increase in the publication of author materials. The largest increase was witnessed by a news portal, with 197 materials written in 2024, compared to 50 in 2022. On the other hand, the biggest decrease was seen by the national television channel Moldova 1, with 53 materials in 2024, compared to 116 in 2023.

"Most of the problems detected during the monitoring period are related to the incorrect use of terminology," journalist Natalia Porubin said during the presentation of the monitoring report. Most often, these violations are committed when writing about people with disabilities. Thus, journalists use the term "handicapped people" instead of "persons with disabilities".

Other mistakes are made when covering cases of violence against women, the identity of the victims not being protected. Also, the identity of the children of women who become victims of violence is not protected.

The report analyzed 20 media outlets operating in the Republic of Moldova, by five more than in the previous report. Thus, 1,075 materials were selected for analysis, most of them being news and reports, and the fewest - editorials and investigations.
