Sympathizers of the Shor Party took part in antigovernment demonstrations staged in  Orhei, Comrat and Balți. The protesters demanded to hold a referendum on Moldova’s foreign choice, IPN reports.

In the protest staged in Orhei, Dinu Țurcanu, the head of Orhei district, said the national referendum is a compromise solution to see the will of people. “The Republic of Moldova forms part of the Europe of nations. We are Europeans by definition and no one should tell us who we are. Europe and the European values mean that wellbeing and democracy feel at home. Today, Moldova is a colony of the big powers. The proposed agenda is a false one. That’s why we should initiate a national referendum in which we should confirm our will and set a clear path for Moldova,” stated Dinu Țurcanu.

Shor Party MP Vadim Fotescu, who took part in the protest held in Comrat, said the current government dares to decide in the name of the citizens, despite the people’s dissatisfaction. “The whole country gathered together at these protests to say that they are against this government and that they want to decide Moldova’s course. Our society is divided into several camps: some want in the EU, while others want in the Customs Union. Most of the citizens want our country to be natural. That’s why we decided to create an organizational group that will initiate a referendum for the people to see the viewpoints on the foreign course,” he stated.

“We came together for a peaceful protest to ask to hold a referendum as we care about the country’s future. Regrettably, the West, together with the PAS and President Maia Sandu, kills our Moldova. We are already in the precipice. The people have the right to decide where Moldova should go. Our country was captured and dictatorship was instituted. Under anticorruption slogans, the current government fights against the opposition only,” the deputy head of Orhei district Irina Bogachuk stated in the protest mounted in Balti.

The chairman of the Shor Party Ilan Shor, in an video transmitted online simultaneously at the three protests in Comrat, Balti and Orhei, said that everyone has the right to opinion, but the final decision can be approved only as a result of a referendum. “Not Brussels, not Washington or Moscow should decide our path. Definitely, neither Maia Sandu nor her party should decide our future as she betrayed the national interests. Today, Moldova is a captured state – we do not have justice, freedom of expression and democracy. When the government is afraid of democratic elections, this means the end of democracy. That’s why we gathered together today to demand a referendum. We today start the legal procedure for deciding the foreign course. The people should decide it,” stated Ilan Shor.

According to the organizers, the protests involved 60,000 people. The police counted fewer than 6,000 participants.
