Russia’s Anti-Terrorist Committee announced the introduction of an anti-terrorist operation regime in the city of Moscow and the oblasts of Moscow and Voronezh, the Russian news agency TASS reported.
It is the first time that a regime of anti-terrorist operations has been imposed in these regions. The decision was taken after the Wagner mercenary group launched an insurrection, with several columns including tanks allegedly marching towards Moscow. The Russian state prosecutor’s office officially charged the goroup’s leader Yevgeni Prigozhin with armed rebellion.
This morning, president Vladimir Putin addressed the Russian nation, condemning the rebellion as “an act of high treason” and “a blow in the back to the country and the people”.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced on his Telegram account that anti-terrorist measures are being taken in Moscow to increase security. Several public events have been cancelled.
An anti-terrorist operation is a legal regime that allows for a series of temporary measures and restrictions. These include identity checks, increased public order measures, control and restriction of telephone communications, use of vehicles belonging to organizations regardless of ownership, suspension of operations in hazardous industries, temporary evacuation of people, restriction of vehicle and pedestrian traffic on streets.
